On average, online users achieve only 40% of their goals online (Source: User Interface Engineering). Many users give up when faced with online resources that are difficult and frustrating to use.

The importance of effective dialogue

Many designers assume they understand user needs, often with wildly inaccurate results. Unfortunately designers don’t necessarily speak the same language as the user or even understand the client's offering. This means the content will be less effective and may contain marketing (or technical) jargon or inappropriately labelled navigation.

A successful online resource must accommodate both client and user needs. Any failure here risks alienating the very web audiences being targeted.
